A form for police and emergency department staff to use when handing over individuals that have voluntarily identified themselves to the police while experiencing a mental health crisis.

A handover process was developed by Healthy London Partnership in partnership with the Metropolitan Police and London’s Urgent and Emergency Care system to improve information sharing, partnership working and safety through the effective handover of risks and care needs for voluntary mental health patients.

The process was co-designed, piloted and evaluated by emergency department clinical leads and the Metropolitan Police. It has been piloted at: Homerton University Hospital, Kings College Hospital, University Hospital, St Mary’s Hospital.

It was developed following an investigation into a homicide case in London concerning a mentally ill patient absconding from the emergency department. Several recommendations were subsequently made, including the need for an appropriate handover when police attend an emergency department with a person who has mental health problems.
