Transforming mental health in London: annual report

A report of the activity conducted by Healthy London Partnership and London Clinical Networks in 2017/18 to improve mental healthcare in London as part of the Mental Health Transformation Board.

It includes:

  • Crisis care
  • Effective diagnosis, treatment and care for people living with dementia
  • Improving access to psychological therapies
  • Improving delays in transfer of care
  • Improving mental health services in primary care
  • Improving services for women and families during pregnancy and the first year after giving birth
  • Mental Health Dashboard
  • Payment and outcomes
  • Psychological support for people of all ages affected by London terrorist incidents
  • Reducing the mortality gap for people with severe mental illness
  • Supporting the system to improve services for children and young people
  • Thrive London

Two million Londoners will experience mental ill health this year. That’s 13 people on every bus or more than 100 people on every tube. London has the highest demand for child and adult mental health services of the whole country, the highest rate of compulsory psychiatric admissions in England and the highest rates of schizophrenia.

Transformation is required at all stages of the pathway – from prevention, self-management and self-care to crisis services and treatment. There needs to be support for people with the most severe mental illness, at all levels of the health and care system, from very local to London-wide.
