While the need to do more within acute trusts to address the Serious Mental Illness (SMI) mortality gap is widely documented, not all hospitals are equipped with expert staff able to assess and care for people with mental ill health skillfully – and compassionately – whilst supporting and training other hospital staff to do the same.
Recommended actions to take
- Deliver workforce training and education to improve quality and efficiency of care.
- Invest in training to ensure all hospital staff who have interactions with patients (clerical and medical) to have the necessary skills and confidence to engage with people who have mental health conditions.
Further recommendations are set out within the main ‘Workforce development‘ and ‘Provider workforce development‘ sections.
