Evaluation

Framework for the evaluation of training and education programmes for cancer in primary care

This framework is designed to support evaluation of all training initiatives for primary care in London, so that TCST and others can understand their effect and to identify and share best practice in cancer training based on learning and behavioural outcomes.

This document aims to support high quality and consistent evaluation of training and educational interventions in primary care to support early diagnosis of and living with and beyond cancer.

Training Needs Assessments (TNAs)

Training Needs Assessments (TNAs) are tools that have been developed to gain an understanding of knowledge, capability and skills relating to early diagnosis and personalised care for cancer in primary and community care.

Data from the TNAs can then be used to develop structured and targeted training for staff in primary and community care.

Training Needs Assessments – 2022

Across September and October 2019, individuals working within a community pharmacy setting within the London region were invited to complete a Training Needs Analysis (TNA) survey, to help identify learning needs in relation to the community pharmacy context.

The specific objectives for this survey were to understand the pharmacy community’s knowledge and skills across a number of areas including; knowledge of potential cancer signs and symptoms, knowledge of screening programmes, perceived risks of cancer and attitudes towards cancer and early diagnosis.

Training Needs Assessments – 2021

The aim of the TNA is to identify training needs for a number of key professionals in primary and community care, with the understanding that more and more different professionals are working in primary care, including, for example, social care workers. The TNA consists of 39 questions divided into 5 sections:

1) Demographics
2) Quiz on cancer (including prevention, screening, ED and PCC)
3) Awareness and uptake of cancer initiatives in primary care
4) Information and preference on education and training models
5) Confidence and experience in managing cancer patients

The TNA ran for 8 weeks between November and December 2020. In total, 591 participants responded to the TNA survey.
