Training: Cancer Prevention Courses

There are many things that the public can do in order to reduce the risk of cancer, including not smoking, healthy eating and drinking, drinking less alcohol, keeping a healthy weight, being more active and staying safe in the sun.

A number of courses  have been developed by Royal colleges and Cancer charities to support primary care professionals in having these, sometimes difficult, conversations with patients.

Prevention

Course description: The online cancer prevention training course covers information about lifestyle and cancer prevention, it teaches the user about how lifestyle affects cancer risk whilst also providing useful and practical tips in talking about cancer prevention.

Behavioural Change and Cancer Prevention

Course description: The online cancer prevention training course will highlight the links between cancer and smoking, obesity and alcohol and describe the evidence for Very Brief Advice (VBA) on behaviour changes to reduce cancer risk.

Cancer in the Community

Aimed at: All community-based health and social care workers, including community matrons, nursing staff, allied health professionals (including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and dieticians) and support workers who meet patients with cancer

Course description: The training course aims to ensure knowledge for community-based workers related to the key aspects of cancer and its treatment becomes embedded into their daily activities, and aims to inspire them to support clients before, during and after cancer is diagnosed.The course is composed of four standalone modules (40–50 minute duration each):
