Peer review of mental health crisis pathways for children & young people

This report summarises the findings from peer reviews of London’s nine mental health crisis pathways for children and young people (CYP) conducted between November 2017 and May 2018.

The peer review follows publication of our CYP mental health crisis guidance and the subsequent CCG self-assessment against the recommendations. Analysis of the self-assessment, completed by the 32 CCGs in London, showed variation in mental health crisis pathways and that none of the recommendations were routinely met across London.

A peer review process was established which was:

  • focused on the CYP mental health crisis pathway
  • supportive in nature to help pathways identify where they are meeting guidance, provide feedback to enable recommendations to be met and test the self-assessment undertaken
  • clinically led but included other stakeholder groups within each panel (e.g. police and commissioning)
  • formative and allowed positive practice to be shared.

The report provides an overview of provision for mental health crisis across London (at the time of the peer review visits) and for each area reviewed gives an overview of the findings, recommendations and some of the positive practice witnessed as part of the review, as well as an overview of next steps.

Healthy London Partnership would like to thank all those who participated in the peer review, from local pathway stakeholders, to those who formed each of the peer review panels. Without their support, the report would not have achieved such depth of insight and much valuable learning would not have been gained.
