Mental health investment from multi-million pound hospital site sale

The Mayor of London has for the first time used his new Land Fund to purchase a site at St Ann’s Hospital in Haringey. The deal will enable the redevelopment of the hospital and provide hundreds of new homes. Pioneering London trusts say good-bye to paper referrals

Four London hospitals are leading London’s way towards electronic-only referrals, for a future NHS of shorter waiting times, better value referrals and greater patient choice. They have switched completely to the NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) and are no longer accepting paper-based referrals for consultant-led first outpatient appointments. #GIRLvsCANCER: Lauren Mahon, 32, writes about her breast cancer diagnosis and the mental and emotional challenges faced on the path to recovery

“When I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 31 and barely any boobs I thought they were having a laugh. But they weren’t. And I did. I have a grade 3 cancerous tumour in my breast which had set up residence without consent and sent my world into a tail spin.The physical impact of cancer treatment was terrifying but I was in no way prepared for the emotional upheaval I was about to face. As somebody who has always been life and soul of the party I began to feel completely isolated and lonely, no longer able to be the person I know myself to be. I lost my sense of self and my confidence. I didn’t look like me or feel like me and I felt a gaping distance between myself and my peers. My priorities and capabilities had changed and my friends just didn’t ‘get it’.

Luckily for me I had the option of counselling at the Royal Marsden which provided no end of support when I slipped into distress and anxiety. It also put the skills I acquired from my CBT sessions to good use, which is something I think should be offered to patients at the point of diagnosis. Spotlight on the 10 High Impact Actions report
This Royal College of General Practitioners report assesses NHS England’s Time for Care Programme – specifically, its 10 High Impact Actions, which aim to cut workload in general practice. It says every GP surgery should be funded to have access to a dedicated social prescriber in a bid to tackle crippling GP workload, and free up their time for those patients most in need of medical care

Going the distance: exercise professionals in the wider public health workforce
This report, written with ukactive, explores how fitness professionals can play an enhanced role in supporting the public’s health. It calls for GP drop-in and smoking cessation services inside gyms and leisure centres to help ease pressure on local health facilities and improve access to health improvement services.

Stress: are we coping
A report from the Mental Health Foundation that looks at the prevalence of stress in the UK and its implications. It also focuses on what we can do to manage and reduce stress and makes recommendations for the government in creating a stress-free UK.

The Prevention Challenge – one year on
Public health professionals in the East Midlands have developed two innovative self-assessment and improvement tools to help NHS provider trusts and clinical commissioning groups take action against preventable long-term diseases caused by lifestyle choices. These reports review progress against the recommendations for both NHS provider trusts and CCGs, including self-identified good practice strengths and planned next steps.

Independent Review of the Mental Health Act: interim report
This review looks at our mental health laws and how they interact with services, good practice and the wider care system summarises progress and early findings of the review. Key concerns highlighted in the report are around rising detention rates, racial disparities in detention, the way in which individuals are detained and the circumstances of their stay while in hospital.

Revaluing parks and green spaces: measuring their economic and wellbeing value to individuals
This report demonstrates that parks and green spaces across the UK provide people with over £34 billion of health and wellbeing benefits and generates savings to the NHS of at least £111 million per year. It calculates that parks provide a total economic value to each person in the UK of just over £30 per year
