Children and Young People Social Prescribing (CYP SP)

NHS England guidance states that ‘Personalised care takes a whole-system approach, integrating services around the person. It is an all-age model, from maternity and childhood through to end of life, encompassing both mental and physical health support’.

In London, Social Prescribing has predominantly focused on the adult population, however the pandemic has accelerated the need for all ages to  access help and support in their communities.

Social Prescribing for Children and Young People (CYP) is a new and emerging area nationally, building on the successful roll-out of Social Prescribing for the adult population.  There is a strategic commitment for London to develop and expand social prescribing service provision for 0-18 year olds (up to 25 for those with special educational needs or disabilities) .

CYP Social Prescribing pilots and projects are already underway in several London boroughs and our plan is to expand to other areas of London in 2022/23.  At HLP, we are bringing together a network of stakeholders involved in, or interested in, CYP Social Prescribing in London.  We are building the evidence base of what works well, and host a Community of Practice for London-based CYP Social Prescribing Link Workers to share their insights and learning.

We are working with the Greater London Authority, the five Integrated Care Systems, NHS London Region Personalised Care and Children’s Transformation teams, Primary Care Networks, local authorities and VCSE partners to raise the profile of this important agenda and support the development of further test and learn sites in London in 2022/23.
