Making sure Londoners with cancer can get diagnosed quickly and start their treatment as early as possible is one of the key areas of work for our Transforming Cancer Services team.
New technology and optimisation work in radiology are reducing the time it takes to get patients diagnosed and treated. To showcase some real London examples of implementing these improvements, our cancer team brought together more than 60 radiology clinicians, cancer managers, operational managers and commissioners from across London at an action learning event on 29 June.
Clinicians and managers from the Royal Free, Homerton, UCLH and King’s College trusts shared their experience of implementing the national optimal lung cancer pathway, introducing point of care testing in computed tomography, booking diagnostic tests in outpatient departments and extending the role of head and neck sonographers to aid recruitment and retention. Each trust hosted a discussion table on their project. The cancer team also ran a radiology optimisation ‘clinic’, showcasing the key actions all radiology services can take to optimise capacity and prepare for the lung, prostate and STT pathway switches.
Feedback from delegates was very positive:
“Very relevant. Lots of ideas to take back.”
“Very useful and reassuring in understanding the challenges are not only in our own department.”
Another similar optimisation event for endoscopy is planned for Autumn.
