Two collaborative mental health projects supported by Healthy London Partnership have been shorted for the HSJ Awards 2018. The Met Police’s ‘Handover process for Voluntary Mental Health Patients in Emergency Departments’ has been shortlisted in the HSJ’s Patient Safety and Improvement in Emergency and Urgent Care categories, and South London and Maudsley’s ‘Implementation of the s136 pan-London new model of care’ has been shortlisted in the Innovation in Mental Health category.

The Metropolitan Police and London’s Emergency Departments (EDs), in collaboration with Healthy London Partnership, have developed a handover process for police when they attend EDs with a voluntary mental health patient. This process identifies risks and improves information sharing and relationships between police and ED staff. A successful pilot demonstrated positive results including fewer missing person reports for voluntary patients from the areas involved; positive feedback from staff and a reduction in the time officers spent at ED to handover patients. The handover process has now been implemented across London with encouraging initial results and there are reports of spread outside of the capital.
‘Implementation of the s136 pan-London new model of care’ has been shortlisted in the Innovation in Mental Health Category.
Since 2015, London’s health and care system including service users have been developing a pan-London new model of care for individuals detained under s136. A multi-agency group developed and endorsed the pan-London s136 Pathway and health based place of safety specification, which outlines the roles and responsibilities of the pathway and the minimum standards of care for health based place of safety sites. The new model was developed from this, focussing on creating ‘Centres of Excellence’ with increased provision, access and quality of care with 24/7 dedicated staffing. The model was piloted in South London and Maudlsey in 2017, through consolidation of 4 sites into 1 (purpose built) with 24/7 dedicated staffing with positive results. A business case was developed from the pilot and a robust options appraisal process, demonstrating the benefits of a pan-London ‘Centres of Excellence’ model. London’s crisis care system and service users are now working towards implementation of the model across London.
