Healthy London Partnership’s Digital Health Passport, produced by in partnership with Tiny Medical Apps, has been selected by NHS Digital as a partner to pilot NHS login.
As set out in the NHS Long Term Plan, NHS login has potential to provide a simple, safe and secure way for individuals to prove who they are and access digital health and care services. The purpose of the pilot is to ensure NHS login can support future demand.
The Digital Health Passport pilot is expected to be launched in spring 2019. It will specifically test the verification process as well as develop processes that permit access to information held by a third party. The Digital Health Passport app will be further developed to design and test ‘delegated access’ by which NHS login is used to access care plans of children by patients and carers.
Sara Nelson, Children and Young People programme lead at Healthy London Partnership said: “Healthy London Partnership is delighted that the Digital Health Passport has been selected for the NHS Login pilot. We see NHS login as a huge breakthrough in enabling patients to access to their health records and having more control over the management of their conditions. When implemented, NHS login will act as an enabler for parents to have access to the most up to date version of their child’s care plans, which can have a considerable impact for the management of long term conditions such as asthma.”
NHS login has already been successfully tested with 3,400 patients across England as part of the NHS App pilot, and is being used in the NHS App as it rolls out across the country.
Ian Phoenix, Director of Citizen Health Technology at NHS Digital said: “We are pleased to announce this latest stage for NHS login and are grateful for the input from our early partners which will no doubt help to improve the service for everyone. A single NHS login will make it easier for people to use health and care websites and apps and lower the burden on the NHS by taking this task away from care workers on the front line.
“NHS login will make it easier and quicker for patients and the public to see their personal health information online which will empower people to manage their health more effectively.”
More about the Digital Health Passport
The Digital Health Passport is a personal health record and assistant that enables young people aged 13-21 years old to take control of their health. With the initial focus of the app being asthma, it contains a digital asthma action plan and method of tracking symptoms that the young person can choose to share with their healthcare team, if they want to. Asthma action plans can also be shared with school nurses, parents and carers. It is designed to make long term conditions easier to manage.
The app has been commissioned by the Healthy London Partnership (HLP) to enable sharing of care plans and to support self-management of chronic conditions like asthma. It is developed by Tiny Medical Apps who are introducing behavioural change techniques, such as gamification and peer support to increase engagement and reduce acute exacerbations of illness.
The initial focus is on asthma to support the work HLP has already been doing in this area, for example developing the London Asthma Ambitions, Standards, the Asthma Toolkit and in response to Coroners Section 28 notices on child deaths from asthma.
