London Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STP) are now engaging locally on how to implement the London-wide model of care for people detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
Health professionals working across London’s acute and mental health services are encouraged to get involved in the development of local proposals and use their experience and expertise to feedback and enhance local plans.
The new model will mean significant improvements to the care people receive when experiencing a crisis in London, as well as system efficiencies for mental health, policing and ambulance services.
The proposals are underway to support the legislative changes relating to Section 135 and Section 136 of the Mental Health Act in the Policing and Crime Act 2017, as well as the need to improve the provision and quality of services across the Section 136 pathway and health based place of safety sites.
Healthy London Partnership has been working with service users and stakeholders over the past three years to develop a new model of care for the Section 136 pathway and a London-wide proposal to make improvements to the services at health based place of safety sites. This has focused on improving the provision and quality of health based place of safety sites; considering increasing demand, enabling 24/7 care and having specialist centres across London with the right levels of capacity.
Engagement across all stakeholder organisations has been extensive, including London’s three police forces, the London Ambulance Service, acute and mental health trusts and local authorities. It is now at the stage where local partnerships are reviewing the London-wide proposals and engaging with their local residents and organisations to determine how best to implement the proposed model of care.
