Care Home access to the London Care Record (LCR)

The Health and Care in the Community (HCIC) team is currently running pilot programmes across three Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) in London to enable 30 care homes to have access to the London Care Record (LCR) – this is the name given to the shared care record across London. Outcomes from the pilots will be evaluated with a view to rolling out the LCR across all London ICBs in 2023.

The LCR is a collection of patient information that health and care providers can contribute to and have access to, providing a complete picture of a patient’s health and care history and needs. By enabling this information to be shared digitally and securely, the aim is to provide more joined up care to service users as they move through different parts of the health and social care system. By care professionals being able to access the LCR also provides peace of mind to patients that their personal information will only be shared with and seen by those directly involved in their care.

To ensure the security of the LCR, only care providers who have completed the Data Security and Protection Toolkit (DSPT) will be given access to these records. The DSPT is an annual assessment that all Care Quality Commission (CQC) registered care providers are obliged to complete. It shows care providers what they need to do to keep people’s information safe and to protect themselves from the risk of a data breach or cyber-attack.

More information about the DSPT and how to register is available at https://www.dsptoolkit.nhs.uk/Help/3

We’ll be sharing updates on progress with the LCR pilots over the coming weeks.
