Transformation Partners in Health and Care > News > Advancing CYP Mental Health Equalities webinar

On 19 October, Healthy London Partnership’s children and young people mental health programme hosted a webinar on Advancing CYP Mental Health Equalities. The webinar was an opportunity to shine a light on some of the amazing initiatives and programmes which have been developed locally and nationally to advance mental health equalities for young people in London.

Learnings were shared to inspire system leaders and mental health professionals on what services and systems could be doing going forwards to support the wellbeing of the young people who face avoidable health inequalities in access, experience and outcomes.

Antonio Ferreira spoke of his racialised experience of CYP MH services and shared thought-provoking reflections. Engaging and inspiring presentations were shared by NCEL Provider Collaborative, Black Thrive, and Hammersmith, Fulham, Ealing and Hounslow Mind. Jacqui Dyer also shared the progress of the NHS E/I Patient Carer Race Equality Framework and regional initiatives with Health Education England which included an overview of what cultural competency means and highlighting what culturally competent services could look like. Discussions on the day featured examples of actions for local services and systems to take to improve accessibility, cultural competency and co-production. The webinar was well-attended by over 180 delegates from a wide range of organisations across London.

Antonio Ferreira, Lived Experience Practitioner (Voice of Young People)

“In my opinion, The Shared Learning Webinar was, without a doubt, incredibly insightful. It was a privilege to co-chair the event. I felt exceptionally inspired by the speakers and the work they had in motion. The webinar offered a sense of comfort; I took away plenty without feeling out of place. That’s the most I can ask for as a young, black man with a mental diagnosis.”

Ian Lewis, Co-chair of the London CYP MH Tackling Inequalities Working Group and HLP CYP MH Local Authority Advisor

“It was an honour to co-chair this event along with Antonio. We heard a range of really inspiring presentations on how service is considering and addressing health inequalities in children and young people’s mental health provision, both at the strategic level and in direct service delivery in London. We are continuing to take this work forward through our roundtable discussions with senior leaders and through our CYP MH Tackling Inequalities Working Group.”
